History of Tripura talks about the information on the monarchy in Tripura which ended on 9 September 1947. One of the Manikya rulers of the 19th century AD was the great Bir Chandra Manikya Bahadur.
He was a great poet and musician and had attempted to modernize and organize the administration of Tripura and put an end to slavery and the practice of Sati. The last ruler of Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya ascended the throne in the year 1923 and before his death in 1947, settled that Tripura should accede to the newly independent country of India.
Tripura officially became a part of India on 15 November 1949 and was a union territory on 1 November 1956. It became a constituent state of the Indian Union on 21 January 1972.
