During the 8th and 13th centuries Daman and Diu were under the stronghold of the Chaudh Rajputs. After which the area was ruled by Muslim emperors for 200 years.

Entering the 16th century Goa saw the arrival of the Portuguese who ruled this beautiful state and the surrounding region for more than 450 years.
The Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, entered into a defensive alliance on the Portuguese being attacked by the Mughal Emperor Humayun.
During this alliance, he allowed the Portuguese to build a fort on the island and maintain a garrison there.
After several attempts by the rulers of Gujarat to overthrow the Portuguese from the fort of Diu but could not succeed in the end the Treaty of 1543 ending Diu for the Portuguese was finally ratified.
Subsequently, various land blocks of Diu Daman and Goa, the west coast of India, formed a political entity after being released from Portuguese rule in 1961. Daman and Diu got the status of a central region in 1978 after Goa became a state.
