It is seen like the French Riviera of the East. Considered one of the most beautiful cities in India, Puducherry attracts tourists from all over the world because of its extraordinary charm.
Its original name is Puducherry but French people call it Pondicherry. The meaning of name Puducherry is "new settlement or new city".
Puducherry was ruled by the Pallava dynasty for some time in the early 4th century. After the Pallava dynasty, many other southern dynasties such as the Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara and after all this the Madurai Sultanate ruled over Puducherry.
In 1674, the French governor Francois Marin converted this small fishing village into a large port.
Puducherry first became famous when the French took an interest in the city. Although there were many wars between the British and the French, Puducherry was ruled by the French. Puducherry made a lot of progress around the 18th century.
The total area of Puducherry is 479 square kilometer and it comprises of 4 smaller anomalous districts - Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. Mahe is situated on the banks of the Arabian Sea while the remaining 3 districts are situated on the banks of the Bay of West Bengal.
The largest parts are Puducherry and Karaikal which are enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Mahe and Yanam are the enclaves of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh respectively.
The area of Puducherry district is 293 square kilometer, Karaikal 160 square kilometer, Yanam 30 square kilometer and Mahe 9 square kilometer.
According to the 2011 census Puducherry district has a population of about 1,244,464. The density of population of Puducherry is 2,598 per square kilometer. Here the sex ratio is 1031 females per 1000 males.
