West Bengal- is located in the north-eastern part of the country. It has Bhutan in the north and Sikkim in the east and Bangladesh in the east and Assam in the north-east. West Bengal is bounded by the Bay of Bengal from the south, Odisha from the south-west, Nepal from the north-west and Bihar from the west.

The alluvial plain of the south of this state gets its water from the Hooghly River and the Hooghly's tributaries are Mayurakshi, Damodar, Kangsabati and Rupnarayan. Its northern Himalayas include Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. There water comes from the fast flowing rivers Teesta, Torsa and Jaldhaka.
Other important cities and towns of West Bengal include Howrah, Asansol, Durgapur, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kharagpur and Haldia. West Bengal has a single chambered Legislative Assembly with 295 seats. 58 members go to the Indian Parliament from this state and it has 16 Rajya Sabha and 42 Lok Sabha. and local government is based on 20 administrative districts.
