Her father was a Marathi musician, classical singer and theater actor while her mother was a Gujarati household lady. Dinanath Mangeshkar's first wife's name was Narmada, after whose death he married her younger sister Shevanti. The surname of Pandit Dinanath was earlier Hardikar which he changed to Mangeshkar. He was a resident of Mangeshi in Goa and on the basis of this he had kept his new surname Mangeshkar.

How Hema became Lata(Hema Mangeshkar)

When Lata was born, she was named Hema. Later, Dinanath liked the name of Latika, a female character of his play, so much that he also named his daughter Lata. Lata was the eldest among five siblings. After them Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath were born. Since childhood, there was an atmosphere of music and art in the house. When Lata was five years old, her father started teaching her music. Along with this, Lata also started acting in father's plays.

Why couldn't I go to school

When Lata grew up a little, she was sent to school like other children. But on the very first day he had a rift with his teacher. In fact, Lata also took her younger sister Asha to school with her. But the teacher did not allow Asha to sit in the class, this angered Lata and she refused to go to school. Her father died in 1942. Then Lata was only 13 years old. Being the eldest daughter, the entire burden of the family had now fallen on her. As a result, he never got a chance to study again.

Started with acting(Lata Mangeshkar Career)

Lata did not like acting. But in the condition of the house, she had agreed to do any work. In such a situation, the owner of Navyug Chitrapat Movie Company, Master Vinayak Mangeshkar and his close people helped a lot in getting Lata work. During this time Lata acted in some Hindi and Marathi films. Lata continued to appear in small roles in films like Mangala Gaur (1942), Majhe Bal (1943), Gajbhau (1944), Badi Maa (1945), Jeevan Yatra (1946). And thus began his career.

First step in singing

Lata was first given the opportunity to sing in a Marathi film in 1942 by Sadashivrao Nevrekar. The song was also recorded but that song was removed in the final cut of the film. People got to hear Lata's voice for the first time in Mangala Gaur, released in 1942. The tune of this song was composed by Dada Chandekar. Lata sang the Hindi song “Mata Ek Saput Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” in the Marathi film Gajabhau released in 1943. Initially, she had to struggle a lot to get work as a singer. Many musicians refused to give him work because of his thin voice. Lata ji was compared with the famous playback singer of that time, Noor Jahan. But gradually on the strength of his passion and talent, he made a different identity for himself.

Travel to mumbai

In 1945, Lata Mangeshkar shifted to Mumbai and started shaping her career in a new way. He started learning Indian classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of Bhindi Bazar Gharana. People liked the hymn “Mata Tere Charan Mein” sung in the film Badi Maa (1945) and the song “Pa Lagoon Kar Jori” sung by Lata in Aapki Seva, released in 1946. Recognizing Lata's talent, Ghulam Haider took her to Shashadhar Mukherjee. Haider recommended him to cast Lata in his film. But he also refused to sing Lata's song citing her thin voice. On this Haider said furiously that in the coming days Lata will dominate the entire film industry and all the producers and directors will fall at Lata's feet and request her to sing in their films. Ghulam Haider made Lata sing a song 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhod' in 1948. Which can truly be considered his first hit. Lata also considered Ghulam Haider as her godfather. He was the first to recognize Lata's talent.

Make your identity different

When Lata started singing in films, there was only one rule of singers like Noor Jahan and Shamshad Begum. Lata herself also liked his singing. But she understood that if she wants to move forward, then she will have to make her own identity apart from these singers. For this, he worked hard and learned the correct pronunciation of Urdu and Hindi words. In the year 1948, he sang a song in the film Ziddi "Chanda Re Ja Re Ja Re". When this song came on the radio, the audience was very curious to know who sang it. Hundreds of people wrote characters in the radio and asked the name of the singer of this song. After which Lata Mangeshkar's name was announced for the first time on the radio. In 1949, Khemchand Prakash sang Lata for the song "Aayega Aane Wala" which was picturized on Madhubala. This song became a huge hit. After this, Lata gave many such superhit songs to the film industry.
